HOMES & NEEDS FOR A TORTOISE
Tortoise come from very different environments. Examples of this are relentlessly hot, desert scrubland to parts of the Northern Hemisphere where it can go extremely cold, especially in winter. In these situations tortoise burrow very deep into the earth for warmth, but basically the different species in both these environments require heat and this is common to all tortoise although their temperatures will vary. At Manchester Pets we were asked how hardy are tortoise if given basic necessary needs and the sales assistant quite surprised me by telling of the Russians sending 2 Horsfield tortoise around the moon as part of their space programme, Sovient Zond 5 mission in September 1968, and you guessed it, the tortoise came back healthy & happy having endured a, no doubt, very strange and difficult situation. So we can safely say, they are hardy creatures if their basic needs are catered for. These needs should be part and parcel of their new home, which again, MP&A can advise you on, be it if you want them to have a simple terraced house or a home off the TV programme Grand Designs.
